As the days shorten and the central heating comes on, the indoor environment changes in ways that are subtle but significant for your orchids. Three variables decide whether an arrangement thrives or fades through the winter: light, water, and warmth.
Light
Phalaenopsis orchids love bright, indirect light. As the sun sits lower in the sky, move your arrangement closer to a window — but avoid harsh, direct sun on the leaves, which can scorch them. A north or east-facing position is often ideal through the darker months.
Water
Over-watering is the most common winter mistake. Central heating dries the air, which can tempt us to water more often than needed. Water sparingly and regularly, allowing the medium to dry slightly between drinks. Ice-cold water shocks the roots — use tepid water instead.
Warmth & Humidity
Orchids prefer stable warmth away from cold draughts and direct heat sources. If your rooms are dry, a little humidity — a nearby bowl of water or an occasional misting — helps the foliage stay supple and healthy.
